EFL Championship: Birmingham City v Leicester City – Mon 18th December – 8pm Kick-off

Newcastle United were runners up in this competition last year and then had to defeat Manchester City and Manchester United to get to this stage of this season’s Carabao Cup.

For Newcastle United, they are desperate for a trophy as it’s been so long since the Geordie fans were able to celebrate lifting a trophy at Wembley. There have been many false dawns including last years defeat to Manchester United and in the past, they have come up against great teams in FA Cup Finals in the late 1990’s.

MILAN, ITALY - SEPTEMBER 19, 2023: Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United and Samuel Chukwueze of AC Milan in action during the UEFA Champions League AC MILAN v NEWCASTLE United FC at San Siro Stadium.

This time Eddie Howe has got a good team who have just picked up a few injuries of late which has seen them knocked out of the Champions League and saw them finish bottom of their group.

In the Premier League, these injuries have hit the team hard as defeats at both Everton and Spurs saw the team lose points in the Top4 chase.

A 3-0 win over Fulham helped Newcastle continue their good home form which has included wins over Manchester United and Arsenal so far this season.

Away form has to improve for Newcastle to progress to the semi-final stage, but with a trophy at stake and both Manchester City and Arsenal out of the competition, Newcastle have enough qualify in the squad to make it count when it matters.

The good news for Newcastle is they are facing a Chelsea team who are very inconsistent. Home defeats to Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, show that teams can come away with a win at Stamford Bridge, but Pochettino himself will be looking for silverware this season as his young Chelsea side look to grow in confidence.

Jackson scored at the weekend to give himself a confidence boost and with Sterling showing signs of his former self, Chelsea have the capability of putting in a full 90 minute performance which can see them beat a top side.

Before the international break, Chelsea drew 4-4 at home to Manchester City, so they can compete with top sides at home and they will need all their fire power to be on song if they are to progress to the semi-finais.

This promises to be a fascinating encounter with both sides knowing this is a massive chance for silverware.

Newcastle are higher in the Premier League and with more of a settled side and more quality in front of goal, they can come out on top in this match.

It won’t be a free scoring game, but with Izak and Gordon playing well, Newcastle can be patient and grab their goals to take them threw.

Therefore, our bet of the day is Newcastle to win in 90 minutes v Chelsea at 3/1 with William Hill.
