England played out a 1-0 win over Haiti in their first group match of the FIFA World Cup and although they would have liked more goals, 3 points is huge in terms of looking to qualify. Georgia Stanway scored the all important goal, a twice retaken penalty, which won England the game.
The Euro 2022 winners found it tough to break through the Haiti defence and missed the killer instinct. Build up play was good and defensively England had goalkeeper Mary Earps to thank, as she made a great save with her legs to deny Haiti an equaliser.
Alessia Russo and Chloe Kelly played well, created chances, but England will be looking to gain momentum as they go through the tournament and when it matters most in the knock out stages, finding the net will become easier.
Haiti caused England some issues on the counter attack, so England will need to ensure they don’t give Denmark these chances, as the fellow Europeans will likely take the opportunity to score.
Denmark started their campaign with a last minute goal to beat Chine 1-0. This was a massive win for the Danes as they look to also gain momentum and will look to avoid defeat agains the European Champions, meaning that a win in their final game against Haiti will be enough to qualify.
England are big favourites to win the game and will be looking to dominate from the off. It’s likely some changes will be made to freshen up the line up, but the mainstays of the team will remain with Milly Bright and Georgia Stanway looking to dominate the game.
It’s expected to be another tight and close encounter as these European teams clash in the 2nd game of the group stage. Both knowing a draw isn’t a bad result, it will be interesting to see how the game plays out if it’s a draw going into the final 10 minutes of the game.
So, tactically, it will be interesting to see how the game develops as England are known for a fast start and will be looking to dominate from the off, but Denmark will be a threat.
England do have quality on the bench and depending on who starts the game, expect England to be able to maintain a high level of possession and looking to break down, what is expected to be a resolute Danish defence.
