World Matchplay Darts – First Round – Monday 17th July

The World Matchplay Darts takes centre stage this week from Blackpool and the top players in the world are ready to land the big trophy.

World Number 1 Michael Smith will be looking to at his maiden PDC World Championship title with a World Matchplay win, whilst you can never write of Michael Van Gerwin to play at his top level and brushing away all comers.

PDC Order of Merit number 2 Peter Wright takes on qualifier Andrew Gilding on Monday night with an excited crowd ready to roar on Peter Wright as he enters the stage with his trademark dance. Peter Wright, winner of the World Championships in 2020 and 2022 is always in the mix at the business ends of the top tournaments and can get off to a flier here in his first round match.

These opening matches, the best of 10 legs can be a banana skin for the top players, so they have to be on their A game as the qualifiers will be out to land a shock to dethrone the top players in the world.

Ensuring you score well and take out the doubles can be a huge confidence booster for the top players as they look to go deep in the Tournament later in the week. Peter Wright needs a win here given his recent performances haven’t been up to his normal top level.

British player Gilding will be out to get up and running quickly with big scoring to put Wright under pressure and aim to cause a big shock in this match up.

The other match we’re following on Monday night is Jonny Clayton against Gabriel Clemens. Jonny Clayton has slowly moved up the rankings and number 7 in the PDC order of merit, Clayton could be one to follow this week.

2021 was his best year by winning The Premier League, Masters and World Grand Prix and since then Clayton is a player you won’t want to face if you’re not on form. Gabriel Clemens is a qualifier for this tournament and he has caused a few shocks in his time.

The German got through to the semi-finals of the PDC World Championships in 2023 and can cope on the biggest stage. He will cause Clayton problems, however should Clayton be on his ‘A’ game then he can come through this tough trst.
